We’ve been meaning to go see our friends Kevin and Stephanie at one of their ballroom competitions for a long time now. This morning they had one pretty much right around the corner at Tufts, so we headed on over. This first photo is not of them. First of all, that much leg is, if you ask me, unseemly. And second, Stephanie would never be the photo hog that this girl was (see the third one down). But still, they’re nice shots. These guys won their group award or something. I have no idea how these competitions work.
The competition was held in a gymnasium, hence all those bleachers and the basketball hoops in the background.
My favorite part was what seemed to be halftime, when all of the couples came out and just boogied while the judges rested. Some were in proper attire. Some were in street clothes. And some were in both. It was a pretty terrific scene.
Here’s Stephanie staying warm in her jacket between dances. Yes, she is very tall, slender and imposing – it’s not just the shoes. She looked terrific.
Here’s Kevin changing ties between events. I’m not sure of the rules. I think it’s Latin in the morning and ballroom after?
After changing, they headed upstairs to a back corridor to get in some extra practice. These are my favorite shots of the day.
They weren’t the only ones who had this good idea.
My advice to young college men: if you’re having trouble meeting girls, consider joining the ballroom club. There were quite a few teams of just girls. Men are clearly in short supply.
Kevin reports that they came in 6th in Smooth Waltz/Tango, 5th in Standard Tango/Foxtrot. I don’t know what those words mean, but they looked terrific.
