Playing Tourist with My Aunt: Maine

I know I promised a full report on the Topsfield Fair, but Tanya ruined everything. She ended up staying in western MA too long and decided not to join us today, and I decided that was a good reason to skip the fair and head on up into Maine.

We took 95 most of the way, but for the little patch of New Hampshire, we took 1A. Once you get past the yuck of Hampton Beach and all that, it’s such a pretty road. See?

We were nearly attacked by this duck.

But at the last minute scrambled across the road and up a giant rock pile where we discovered the ocean had been waiting all along. And so it was that my aunt (Gail) got onto the beach for the first time. Proof:

After that, we hopped back on 95 and made our way to Freeport where I spent too much at Horny Toad and Gail bought some Yankee candles (made from real yankees).

We stopped for lunch in Freeport and had lobster stew (i.e., cups of cream, butter, and lots of lobster meat) and a lobster roll (I had roast beef – don’t go thinking I suddenly like lobster).

After that we needed a little walk so we headed to Wolf Neck Woods State Park (the spot where Dad and I saw the osprey nest last year).

It was windy and this poor little ground squirrel had to hide under a rock.

But I still made Gail climb to the top of a rock so I could take her photo.

Tomorrow I have to work all day, so Gail’s off to New England Aquarium while it rains in the morning, and then the Freedom Trail in the afternoon. I won’t be taking photos of work.

  1. Yep! That spot is so pretty, and it’s right by the road. In the spring it’s pretty with all the buds on the trees. Then in the summer the lilies bloom. And in fall, this. I’ve never been by in winter, but I’ll bet it’s incredible then too.
