Trip to Iowa
We packed up our bags and headed for Iowa over Memorial Day weekend. Linus is an old pro at traveling, so when he got to the airport, he just relaxed and took everything in.
We were excited to find when we got to the gate that it was next to a little playground. Linus spent almost an hour happily running around. I have to stay too that Yen was the only parent who slipped off his shoes and ran around playing too. Everyone else just sat with their phones while their kids played. In my defense, I nursed Mina.
Here’s Linus all strapped in and ready for the flight. Even though he’s still young enough to qualify as a “lap child,” we thought it was better for everyone if we bought him his own seat. He had a terrific time in his window seat, watching the luggage cars and the fuel trucks, and then checking out the clouds as we took off and landed. In the air, though, he was the window police. Shades down, everyone!
Little Mina did a great job too. We only had one flight during which she cried most of the time. Her nap schedule was off, and she was just so tired. But once we made it to the hotel, she was back to her old self again.
Our original plan was to meet the Chandlers, Mom, and Dad in Omaha and go to the zoo. Unfortunately it was opening weekend for a big exhibit that’s been six years in the making. They had 20,000 visitors that day! We decided instead to go for a walk in good old Waubonsie Park. Linus was really glad to stretch his legs even though it was much hotter and more humid than we’re all used to.
Yen tried to get some nice photos of us, but it’s awfully hard at these ages. By the way, don’t worry about my nose. It was just a little cosmetic tweak.
After our walk, we were hungry. We drove into Nebraska City and had brunch at the Lied Lodge, and then walked over to check out the Arbor stuff.
I made out with Mina in the lobby. I can’t resist her!
Linus has become our leader when we got for walks. He just sets out (whether we’re following or not).
Here we are with Grandma. Doesn’t she look great?
Here’s grandma with all of the great-grandkids (I’m just there as a platform for my kids, who clearly had other ideas.
I couldn’t resist including this outtake, where pretty much everyone is just doing their own thing.
And then the grandkids.
And the kids!
We stayed at Donna’s but walked down to Zach’s a couple of times. Linus always led the way because in Zach’s yard there’s a huge windmill. He made a perfect beeline for it!
He helped Doyle do chores in exchange for a ride in a tractor.
Mina and Grandpa. She didn’t pull his beard once!
And here’s Mina with Grandma. Of course she remembered her.
Mina allowed Dick to touch her feet.
Linus was very shy at first, but after a while he started playing with Dick and was really cracking up.
Mina sat with Grandma again for a few pictures.
Here’s Linus sacked out for a nap. I think he enjoyed napping in the big bed instead of on the floor as he usually does at home. He used all the pillows.
Drawing with Ruby.
Linus was completely fascinated by the piano.
We tried hard to get a group photo, but the kids were just really struggling, especially Mina. At least we were all together!
Back on the plane again. on the way home. Linus slept through the entire first flight, and then Mina took her turn on the second. It was all very smooth.
Just the same, we’ve decided not to fly again for a while…
