Woods Hole and Falmouth (sort of)

We did what basically amounted to a drive-by of Woods Hole and Falmouth Saturday. A late start, traffic and dinner plans conspired to give us all of an hour and 45 minutes to wander around (yes, I know it was that specific because that’s what we put on the parking meter). We picked out things to do next time, though – lots of bike paths down there, many running right along the coast.

Before we parked, we got stuck at a drawbridge. Loads of tourists were stopped also, and right pissed at having to wait a few more minutes before they could buy an ice cream.

We ended up having lunch right next to the drawbridge at The Fishmonger Cafe. In fact our table looked out over the little office of the drawbridge keeper, and we got to watch as he asked his questions three. Yen had mussels, so he’s a happy guy. I had fish tacos but they were pretty bland. In general we were a little irked that the Fishmonger had so little fish on the menu.

We asked the waitress what two people with only one hour who’d never been to Woods Hole ought to do. She suggested that we walk to the lighthouse. Complete foolishness. The lighthouse is about a 35 minute walk down a street with no sidewalks. I think we’d’ve been better off window shopping (despite that neither of us enjoys shopping; I’m just sayin’).

Anyway, but I did see a little colony of tree swallows, and that mollified me. As birds always do.
